Update 1 August 2013: A letter to supporters from Humphrey Nightingale.
Firstly, on behalf of Danny and the family, I would like to say thank you for your support over the past year, it has been invaluable as we have carried on the fight to clear Danny’s name.
We were all bitterly disappointed with the verdict last week. We were shocked to hear medical evidence from one of the world’s foremost experts dismissed as ‘spurious’ and it was a kick in the teeth to hear Judge Advocate General Blackett attack our campaign.
The verdict is not the end of the issue for the family. I am writing today to ask for your help to raise £60,000 to clear the outstanding bills incurred during the recent trial. These bills are waiting to be paid and any help you can afford us to clear them would be greatly appreciated.
To date, the total bill is nearly £300,000 to fund Danny’s defence, including expert witnesses and medical reports, and we have been helped by some very kind donations outside of the family.
The public have donated more than £15,000 through the www.dannynightingale.org website and there will be a fundraising ball on October 19th – you can find details on Facebook.
We are currently considering our options, including the potential of an appeal. However, with these costs still hanging over Danny, Sally and the family that is a very difficult decision to make.
You can donate through the website www.dannynightingale.org or if you would prefer to pay by bank transfer or cheque, please call 0207 3406030 to speak to Big Brother Watch, who are managing the fundraising campaign. Please do share details of the appeal with your own friends and family.
This issue goes further than Danny’s case. The injustice our family has experienced will not be the last case without reform, as Danny’s solicitor Simon McKay argued in the Guardian.
Thank you again for your support. It is greatly appreciated.
In the event of any funds remaining after the payment of Danny’s legal bills, they will be donated to the SAS Regimental Association.
"The family are hugely grateful to Big Brother Watch for getting behind them and supporting them in this way. The trial process is stressful and anxiety provoking but Big Brother Watch's resolve to work with Danny and his legal team to meet the costs is a huge relief to us all."
Humphrey, Danny's father
